Associate Professor Julie Matthews is Director of Research at the newly established University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. Her background is in sociology, anthropology and education. She is currently working on research projects which investigate refugee education in Australia, and reconciliation pedagogy in Australia and elsewhere. Her research interests include pedagogy, minority education, international education, reconciliation, multicultural/antiracist education, globalisation, postcolonialism and forced migration, cosmopolitanism and transnationalism, identity, diaspora, new ethnicities, racism, racialisation and sexualisation and is informed by postcolonial, feminist and Foucauldian theory. She has research in community, institutional and virtual settings including schools, youth groups, museums, malls, and advertising websites and ICT communications. She is particularly interested in the use of visual methods which create common grounds for dialogue and engagement.
