How to navigate this web:

Follow a linear path

Starting with the introduction, you may follow the "next" and "back" links to read the entire piece.

Follow hypertext links

Throughout the piece, there are links between related sections. Underlined links are new, while unadorned green words indicate "visited" links. Different threads are connected throughout the piece with words in [ brackets ]

This web is designed to be bandwidth- and bookmark-friendly. A couple pages have flash files with embedded sound. In each case, the files are less than 100K. One page has a link to a pop-up window with a quicktime clip.

All links remain in-window except: footnotes, which open in pop-up windows, and the database nav bar, which also opens in a pop-up window. External links open in-window, and are marked with an [E].

Major divisions begin with a MODULE in courier font.
